Building up when you can't build out.

West Marion Community Hospital needed more beds. The only available direction was vertical—directly above an active rehab wing with patients below. Layton delivered 106,000 SF across seven phases, adding 42 Med/Surg rooms, four new OR suites, SPD expansion, lab renovations, and a new Central Energy Plant, with structural capacity for nearly 50 additional beds in the future.

Patients below, construction above, zero disruptions.

Prefabrication did the heavy lifting. Bathroom pods, patient room headwalls, electrical rooms, interior wall panels, and medical gas systems were all pre-assembled off-site, reducing on-site labor, compressing installation time, and keeping noise above occupied patient rooms to a minimum. The project also required crossing 33 major underground utilities. Using hydroexcavation and carefully planned overnight switchovers, Layton completed every transition without a single unplanned disruption to hospital operations.
