Repurposed and refreshed.
After 20 years of occupation, the Madison Street Jail sat vacant in central Phoenix for more than a decade. Rather than demolishing the existing structure and rebuilding, Layton helped Maricopa County repurpose the original facility and convert it into a Class A office building. The environmental and financial impacts of this re-use project were substantial. Not only did it save 2.1 million pounds (1,050 tons) of reinforced steel and 65 million pounds (32,500 tons) of concrete waste, taxpayers saved over $45 million in rebuilding costs.
