Salt Lake City, UT (August 28, 2024) – Layton Construction has officially broken ground on the University of Utah’s new baseball stadium: Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark. Designed to elevate the student experience and enhance campus life, this project highlights Layton’s commitment to building communities where we live, work, play and learn.

Located in the heart of the University of Utah’s campus, the new baseball stadium will feature 1,200 seats, concessions, restrooms, and ticketing offices, providing a complete experience for fans and visitors. The project also includes modern team facilities with locker rooms, meeting spaces, and offices, supporting the university’s athletic programs. The field, equipped with advanced lighting, fencing, and a cutting-edge scoreboard, will meet the highest standards for college sports.

“I hope today is a day of nostalgia of memories because there is no other sport like America’s pastime where you can sit and watch and keep score and try to connect what happens next and just enjoy what truly is America” says Taylor Randall, President at University of Utah. “Today is also more than anything else about the future. This is about the future of this baseball team in the Big 12. This is about the future of this baseball team playing on the national stage.”

This stadium represents a significant milestone in the University of Utah’s ongoing efforts to provide top-tier athletic facilities. Having partnered with the university on numerous projects in the past—including the Ken Garff Performance Zone at Rice-Eccles Stadium—Layton is once again committed to ensuring this new stadium blends in seamlessly with the campus. It will also provide the university with a dedicated space, as the team has shared Smith’s Ballpark in downtown Salt Lake City with the Salt Lake Bees minor league baseball team as its primary home since 1996.
