Lahaina, Hawaii (August 6, 2025) – In the wake of unimaginable loss after the 2023 Lahaina wildfires, NAIOP Hawaii recognized Layton Construction at the 2025 Kukulu Hale Awards for its critical work on the Kapalua Village Emergency Housing project. This effort provided urgently needed shelter and hope to displaced families on the island of Maui.

Presented in the Commercial/Other Over 40,000 SF or Less category, the award highlights excellence in design-build collaboration, project innovation, and community impact. In partnership with TY Management Corporation, Daiwa House Group, and Kasprzycki Designs, Layton led the construction of 50 modular homes. This was part of a larger philanthropic effort to restore stability and safety to fire-affected families.

A Community-Built Solution

Each home, ranging from two to four bedrooms, came fully furnished and equipped with kitchen and bathroom amenities. Despite the logistical challenges of building on an island still in recovery, Layton and its partners met an aggressive timeline—enabling tenants to move just one year after the fires.

To keep the project moving, Layton coordinated seamless collaboration between national and local partners. Working closely with Maui-based trades, they combined modular units from Daiwa House Corp with locally sourced materials and equipment. This strategic approach minimized delays and, importantly, boosted local engagement and economic impact.

Ohana Hope Village: Restoring the Human Spirit

Layton’s involvement in rebuilding this part of Maui extended beyond a single project. Working alongside Family Life Center and Hawaii Off Grid, Layton also supported the creation of Ohana Hope Village—a temporary community of 83 off-grid homes designed to support privacy, dignity, and healing.

On-site leadership came from Layton Project Manager Melissa Humphrey. The team contributed over 1,200 volunteer hours in project management. Using modular design and volunteer coordination, they created a village where homes were arranged in small clusters. Each cluster included access to shared kitchens, meeting rooms, and mental health support—reinforcing how shelter and community go hand in hand.
