St. George, UT (August 14, 2025) – City, county, and state officials gather with Layton Construction at St. George Regional Airport (SGU) to celebrate the groundbreaking of an air traffic control tower, marking a major milestone in Southern Utah aviation.

Since SGU relocated to its current site in southeastern St. George in 2011, the airport’s air traffic operations have been remotely managed by controllers at Los Angeles International Airport. However, as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, St. George has seen a dramatic surge in flights, creating an urgent need for on-site air traffic control.

“This tremendous increase in demand has raised concerns for the safety of those flying in and out of our airport,” said Mayor Michelle Randall. “The city of St. George is committed to continuing to grow our airport, and building this tower will significantly improve safety for air travel in southern Utah.”

City, county, and state officials stand in a row with shovels at the groundbreaking ceremony for Utah’s first air traffic control tower outside the Wasatch Front at St. George Regional Airport. A yellow excavator is in the background.

The new tower is expected to attract more airlines and expand flight service options to and from Southern Utah, supporting economic growth and increased regional connectivity. It will also significantly improve the safety and efficiency of both commercial and general aviation flights in and out of the airport.

Funded primarily by the state of Utah, with additional support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the new tower will become Utah’s fourth air traffic control tower—and the first located outside the Wasatch Front.

“Transportation is so critical to economic development all across the world,” said Mike Shultz, Utah State Representative and Speaker of the House. “When we decide where to put taxpayer dollars, we look for projects that make a real difference in economic development and the everyday lives of the Utahns we serve. This project checks every box.”

Leading the project from their St. George office, Layton brings extensive aviation expertise to the build. The company is honored to add this air traffic control tower to its growing portfolio of western airport projects, including work at Provo Airport, Boise Airport, Sky Harbor in Phoenix, and Salt Lake City Airport. Construction will officially commence in September.
