Billings, MT (June 23, 2025) – Layton has officially broken ground on the St. Vincent Regional Hospital—a once-in-a-generation project set to redefine healthcare for the Billings community. The replacement facility is designed to address the current needs of patients in the region, while accommodating both long-term population growth and future healthcare needs of the community.

The hospital’s advanced design reflects a strong commitment to innovation and flexibility. All operating rooms will be able to accommodate the latest advancements in medical and robotic surgical technology, with futureproofing at the core of the planning process. Surgical zones will be fully integrated, combining pre-op, procedure, and recovery spaces to streamline patient care and improve clinical efficiency.

“Practicing 21st-century medicine in a 10-year-old building is extremely hard,” said Lee Boyles, Intermountain Health President for St. Vincent Regional Hospital and the Montana-Wyoming market.  “To have rooms that fit the times and the technology available, it’s going to be incredible.”

The 14-floor, 737,000-square-foot replacement hospital will include 243 beds, all housed in universal rooms designed to seamlessly convert up to ICU-level care—meaning they can evolve as patient needs grow. Set to open in 2029, the new hospital represents a critical investment in modern, adaptive, and efficient healthcare.

“It’s special when a vision becomes reality for the community and caregivers in Billings, MT,” said Randy Patterson, Executive Vice President at Layton Construction. “The successful collaboration this team has had through the design phase and preconstruction phases are a testament to our evolution as a leading healthcare builder and will only continue as we help to build the new era of healthcare for St. Vincent Hospital.”

The St. Vincent Regional Hospital will also be a major driver of economic growth in the region. At the peak of construction, the site will employ 600-700 workers, with an estimated 1,200 total individuals contributing to the build over the course of the project.
