Dallas, TX (September 10, 2024) – Layton Construction, along with Medical City Dallas Heart & Spine, reached new heights with a topping out ceremony on September 10. The expansion, which adds three floors and a penthouse to the existing hospital, will include 28 new intensive care unit (ICU) beds with space for 28 future ICU beds, along with newly installed elevators.
The project’s design features prefabricated headwall and bathroom pods and exterior panels. The curved glazed front wall exterior of the addition will create a stunning feature, stretching across all four stories.
Construction within an active hospital always brings unique challenges, particularly with critical areas like an operational ICU and operating room. For the expansion, both the ICU and ORs are directly below the expansion site. The Layton team has worked closely with Medical City Dallas and the HCA team to coordinate construction schedules, often working off-hours and weekends to minimize disruptions to patient care.
With this coordination comes a heavy focus on infection control, which remains a top priority throughout the project. Even minor vibrations could pose possible risks. As such, Layton has implemented advanced safety protocols and taken extensive measures to minimize the impact on patients at all levels of facility management.
With final completion slated for September 2025, the topping out ceremony marks a major step in the expansion, which will enhance critical care services at Medical City Dallas. This expansion will increase the hospital’s capacity to treat complex heart and spine conditions, providing necessary ICU beds and advanced services for northern Texas.
