In 2015, despite being one of the nation’s top general contractors, Layton Construction was not a recognized name in the Bay Area. With multiple Fortune 500 companies and healthcare systems based in Northern California, we set out to change that.

Fast forward to 2020 and we have much to celebrate as the San Jose office commemorates its 5-year anniversary and recent recognition as one of the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area!

While celebrating these milestones, it’s fun to look back at how it all started.

California is home to some of the most recognized companies in the world such as Adobe, Cisco, eBay, Facebook, Google, Intel, Tesla, and many more. Additionally, the California construction market reported $27.4 billion in revenue according to ENR in 2014. In 2015, with Layton growing to be an industry leader in its own-right, a permanent move to the Bay Area made sense.

At the time, our only office in California was in Irvine. Despite that, we still had project wins in the Bay Area like the Marriott Courtyard in Sunnyvale, a distribution center in Livermore, and a correctional facility for San Mateo County. With a healthy market and proven success in Northern California, it was only natural to create an additional office in that region.

Layton’s relationship with a local contractor, Fernandes & Sons, provided an opportunity to increase our presence in the market. The company had similar values to ours and had built a strong reputation in the Bay Area, and had carved out a niche in healthcare tenant improvements. Layton saw an opportunity where the two companies could share our strengths as one under the Layton name, so we acquired the company in the spring of 2015.

It creates a unique situation where we can build relationships that will help us grow Layton and now STO.”

As previously mentioned, a recent win for our San Jose team was being recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area. This is especially significant when you consider the companies we were competing against. Layton employees ranked our company high in several areas including team effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, and manager effectiveness. Here’s an example of what one employee had to say:

Layton’s San Jose office, led by Whitney Walter and Chris Jensen, has come a long way in five years. Our reputation has attracted top talent that has allowed us to grow the office to 75 employees and into a major player in the Northern California healthcare market. Layton has landed key projects in the area for Sutter Health, Alameda Health System, John Muir Medical Center, Dignity Health, Regional Medical Center of San Jose, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital that have propelled strategic growth in Northern California.

Jensen and Walter don’t plan on letting up any time soon, with market diversification being a major focus moving forward while bolstering existing healthcare relationships.

I am proud of the growth of this office and am excited to see where we’ll be in another five years as we build on this base and diversify into new local markets,” Jensen explained.

While celebrating all the hard work that has paid off these past five years in Northern California, Layton plans to expand this success as a result of our merger with the STO Building Group. Our goal is to play off one another’s strengths to build on our success in the Bay Area, Sacramento, and beyond.
