BOISE, Idaho (December 6, 2019) – Technical rescue teams from the Boise Fire Department recently scaled new heights at a construction site at St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.
Layton Construction played host to crews of about 10 firefighters from B and C shifts on Nov. 22 and 23 at the construction site for the expansion of the medical center. The teams trained for two rescue scenarios. The first scenario involved removing a crane operator from his cab at the top of the construction crane. The other scenario involved the rescue of a worker caught by a fall arrest device and who is dangling from the crane.
The firefighters used a two-rope rescue system to lower the mock injured workers from the top of the tower crane to the lower decks of the hospital’s parking garage. They also reviewed rescue and support techniques for injured employees at other locations at the construction site.
“A crane rescue is a rare event, but we want to be ready for whatever may happen. This type of training is extremely valuable, and without Layton Construction partnering with us, this would not be possible,” said Capt. Brent Matthews, Boise Fire Department.
“Safety training is how we teach workers to identify workplace hazards and continue to work safely,” said Layton Safety Manager Randy Smith. “Holding practice drills is an excellent way to develop the experience and know-how to respond in an emergency and keep employees ready.”
