Safety

At Layton, we value the safety of all our employees. Our success is directly related to our commitment to safety and quality.

We regularly and continually train our workforce to ensure safe and successful projects. We have a full time safety staff coordinating our safety processes at all Layton sites.

Our safety program adds value to our projects and minimizes the risk of a major incident for our clients.

Our Safety Record
Layton’s safety record is exemplary. Our current Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is 0.67, and we have worked as many as 5,000,000 hours without a lost time accident. Together, Layton employees spend between 10,000 and 15,000 hours per year on safety trainings and seminars.Layton has also been recognized within the construction industry for our value of safety. Every year since 1993, we have earned both the Association of General Contractors (AGC) National Certificate of Commendation for Safety Excellence and the AGC Utah Chapter Outstanding Safety Award.

Safety for L.I.F.E.
One unique aspect of Layton’s safety program is the Layton Injury Free Environment, or L.I.F.E program, through which we encourage our employees to think about safety both on and beyond the jobsite. Because safety is a value at Layton, it is something that we strive to achieve 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at work, play and home. L.I.F.E. encourages employees to apply the safety value as a life style. An example of off the job training available to all employees includes free first aid and CPR classes, which are offered to employees and their families. The overall effect of this comprehensive program is that our employees become safety-minded individuals who think about the safety of themselves and others in any situation, at work or play, around the clock and every day.

To achieve our outstanding safety record, Layton’s safety team is continually monitoring jobsites, training employees and looking for new ways to improve worksite safety. However, our record is not achieved by the safety team alone. Every Layton employee is responsible for maintaining the company safety value. Some ways that we achieve excellence in safety include:

Continuous Safety Training
From their very first day with the company, all Layton employees receive training on safety procedures and policies. For our craft labor, a three-month new employee support period includes daily mentoring in safety procedures and supervisor interviews at 30, 60, and 90 day anniversaries.
Our training does not end there. Each morning, on-site superintendents lead a stretch and flex program and then conduct a pre-task planning meeting for the day, identifying potential safety issues. Employees are regularly trained in first aid, CPR, fall protection, scaffold usage, hazardous materials handling and more.

Safety observations at all levels of management
All Layton jobsites have mandatory weekly safety inspections, conducted by the on-site superintendent. These inspections are documented, and reports are kept on file in the jobsite trailer.
Additionally, all managers are required to perform periodic safety observations. From the president of the company to the on-site superintendents, at every level of our organization, safety is a value. The Layton management team makes regular and unannounced safety walks a top priority.

Subcontractor Safety
Subcontractor participation is fundamental to ensuring on-site safety. Before subcontractors are selected for any job, pre-bid safety reviews are conducted with each subcontractor. A pre-mobilization safety review, which all subcontractors are required to attend, outlines project specific safety requirements and reiterates the team’s commitment to safety.
