Steel Topping Off Ceremony Held at Layton’s University Hospital Expansion Project
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (July 9, 2008) – The University Hospital Patient Care Pavilion is nearing completion – a ceremony celebrating the placement of the final steel beam was held July 9th on the University Hospital’s helipad adjacent to the construction site. Layton Construction is completing the Patient Care Pavilion, an addition to the existing hospital that is the final phase in a three-part hospital expansion project. Layton also completed the two previous expansion phases, with the Critical Care Pavilion opening in 2003 and a vertical expansion to the parking structure and helipad for the Hospital completed in the fall of 2007.
The steel beam was adorned with an American flag and an evergreen tree, part of an old Scandinavian tradition dating back to as early as 700 A.D. that symbolizes prosperity and good luck. Construction workers, hospital personnel, media and spectators were all invited to add their signature to the beam before a tower crane hoisted it away from the helipad and put it into place.
The beam is the last of 1,900 tons of steel that Layton has used in the Pavilion’s steel skeleton. The new Patient Care Pavilion has been engineered to endure significant earthquake activity. Construction crews used heavy-duty beams to support the building and add to its structural strength and integrity – the beams used for the expansion weigh 500 pounds per linear foot.
The completed Patient Care Pavilion will have space for 120 new private patient rooms, a new cafeteria and a new lobby. Work is expected to be complete in the summer of 2009.
