Layton Construction Projects Receive Excellence in Concrete Awards

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah(April 24, 2008) – Layton Construction Company continues to turn out award-winning projects. Four Layton projects recently won 2008 Excellence in Concrete Awards from the American Concrete Institute’s Intermountain Chapter. Layton’s winning projects include the Boise State University Parking Structure #2 (Boise, Idaho), Jordan Landing Retail Center Phase VI (West Jordan, Utah), Kings Corner Railroad Overpass (Nampa, Idaho) and the University of Utah Hospital Parking Structure and Helipad (Salt Lake City, Utah).

The Excellence in Concrete Awards are established to recognize the innovative and aesthetic uses of concrete by all those involved in the construction process, from owners and architects to general contractors, engineers and ready-mix concrete producers.

The 238,000 square foot Boise State University Parking Structure #2 is a five-level, above-ground parking structure that includes 757 parking stalls as well as 9,000 square feet of ground level office space. The structure is mainly post-tensioned concrete with brick façade. Extensive concrete reveals were used on the exterior concrete walls for added aesthetics.

Layton completed the 160,000 square foot Jordan Landing Phase VI project, which includes the large sporting goods anchor Sport Chalet as well as Michaels, Kinko’s and PetSmart. The entire retail facility features CMU and structural steel with steel stud framed EIFS facades. The Sport Chalet features an indoor pool and a 16,000 square foot roof-hung display shelf. Over 90,000 square feet of slab-on-grade concrete was placed in four pours for the project – totaling nearly 400 cubic yards of concrete

For the Kings Corner Railroad Overpass project, Layton built two new bridges to realign a dangerous intersection in Nampa, Idaho that involved four roads and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks converging. The project consisted of two multi-span steel plate girder bridges with concrete decks spanning the Union Pacific Railroad main line and yard tracks in Nampa. The project was significantly concrete. One span consisted of 608 feet of concrete deck over structural steel beams and the second overpass was of similar construction, measuring 360 feet in length.

Layton Construction is currently working on a massive expansion to the University Hospital in Salt Lake City. As part of the project, Layton completed the vertical expansion of the hospital’s existing parking structure/helipad, taking it from three levels to five and a half levels. The half level (helipad) is half the square feet of the other floors but is considered a sixth level for the hospital’s helicopters to land on. The post tensioned decks at each level were placed in two pours of approximately 500 cubic yards each. All the work was accomplished in an extremely tight working area, as the hospital continues to function and the ambulance road, main hospital entrance and emergency room entrance are all within feet of the project and could not be interrupted or inconvenienced.
