Modern Healthcare magazine released its annual Construction & Design Survey on March 12, 2012. In the 2012 survey, Layton Construction Co., Inc. is ranked as the fifth largest general contracting company in the United States, based on 2011 revenues. Layton has been involved in healthcare construction for the past 23 years and last year completed projects in eight states throughout the country. Work on healthcare-related projects accounted for nearly half of Layton's revenues in 2011.
"This is a significant accomplishment and only possible due to each and everyone's commitment to be the best and work hard," Steven Brecker, an executive vice president with Layton's Healthcare Construction Group, said in an email. "We focus on our bottom line, not our top line, yet this recognition truly puts our company in a select group able to perform healthcare construction services."
Layton recently completed the new 208,000-square-foot South Jordan Health Center, the University of Utah's largest off-campus medical facility, located in South Jordan, Utah. The facility offers primary, emergency and specialty care services and features the state of Utah's second stand-alone emergency department. The South Jordan Health Center was designed with efficiency and sustainability in mind and is seeking a LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council®.
Another significant healthcare project Layton wrapped up in the past year is the 353,000-square-foot Portneuf Medical Center, located in Pocatello, Idaho. The project involved a complete campus expansion to the old Portneuf Medical Center and includes a six-story patient tower housing 187 acute care beds, a 25-bed emergency department and 16 newborn intensive care beds, along with a helipad and attached hangar. The project is LEED certified.
Projects Layton's Healthcare Construction Group is currently working on include a massive expansion to the University Hospital Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The project includes the construction of a new nearly 1,000,000-square-foot patient tower, the addition of new inpatient rooms and the replacement of many existing adult rooms to bring the total from 498 to 700+ patient beds, a new Emergency Center and operating rooms and the construction of a new 3,300-space parking structure. Layton is completing the project as a joint venture with Zachry Construction Corporation and Vaughn Construction.
